1. Close All Programs
Close all open programs. Programs that are loaded into memory (RAM) will use up valuable resources of your Mac. Its important to close all open programs to free up memory and keep only needed programs open. See the dock and you will notice what items are open by the black dot on the bottom. You can open the program and use the keyboard shortcut Command + Q or right click on the dock icon and select Quit.
2. Restart or Shutdown Your Mac For At Least 1 Hour.
Our Macs are like the human body. They need to shut down and rest to continue to stay healthy. Choose the Apple Logo at the top left of your Mac and select Restart... or Shut Down... You will want to do this at least 3 or 4 times per week to keep your machine at best performance.
3. Open Activity Monitor To Discover Not Responding Applications.
Activity Monitor is a behind the scenes look at what your Mac is processing. It is one of the most useful applications in our Mac. You can identify and force close applications that are not responding. Select the magnifying glass at the top right near your name next to the clock and search Activity Monitor. Alternatively you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + Space bar to open up Spotlight Search. If you see any red applications right click on it and force close it. If your Memory Used and Physical Memory match or Memory Used is higher and Swap Used has a GB next to it, continue with the blog post.
4. Reset the PRAM
Resetting the PRAM is a physical command you will give your slow Mac to help speed up and free up resources. First you will want to shut off your Mac. This command will not erase anything it will simply flush your RAM contents (Non-Volatile Memory) .
5. Upgrade Your Mac with more RAM and/or SSD Drive.
